I have impulsed a number of ways. Balloon pops, belt snaps and tone sweeps through speakers.
I like the speaker sweeps the best. Sound Forge comes with acoustic mirror and you can find the tone sweeps on their site. Acoustic mirror can deconvolve after you record the sweep.

I haven't got around to creating IRs with 7 yet, but the IRs I created with 6 (with pictures) transferred just fine. Essentially, you just put pictures in a folder with the IRs:

The phase characteristic of a sweep signal is linear, starting from 0 and increasing over time up to 2*Pi.
