My dad purchased a lavalier microphone (one with a 3.5 mm connector) for business meetings and was unaware that it needed a power supply. Could a simple 3.5 mm to usb converter power it via USB? If not are there any cheap alternatives which could power it and allow it to plug directly into the computer?

We would need to know more about your microphone, to understand what it needs. – Rory Alsop Aug 19 at 16:03

If that 3.5mm jack is meant for a microphone, it might already offer the possibility of powering an electret microphone . Or you can build a battery supply adapter (9V battery and even 2 x AA alkalines) inside a small box and insert it between microphone and adapter.
