According to this standard one can embed chapter markers in MP3 ID3v2 tags. I've found a few apps which put the chapter tags into mp3 files (Forecast, ID3v2 Chapter Tool, mp3chap), but no apps on desktop to play them back with chapters. VLC for example plays the audio but doesn't show the chapters in their menus or skip to them with their 'next' button.

Does anyone know of any desktop apps which can display and playback mp3 files with their chapters? Windows, Linux, or Mac is OK.

EDIT: If you're down-voting please explain why.

  • Hi Paul, I don't think this is within scope for this site, and the question is a bit vague. What do you mean when you say the apps you have found which assign tags can't test and confirm they work? – Rory Alsop Dec 22 '18 at 9:49
  • id3v2-chap-tool.sourceforge.net Clearly says that "most" players don't actually support the chapter API. There are some web-based ones that do, it's commonly used with audiobooks. – Mark Dec 23 '18 at 14:57

ffprobe is a command line tool which can display the chapter tags in mp3 files from desktop operating systems.
