I just got an electric piano/synthesizer with a MIDI cable output and would like to get some software that will allow me to record what I play, add some effects, and overlay multiple tracks to make/mix my own music. I'm an absolute beginner at all this and don't know where to start. There seem to be a ton of high-end professional packages out there like ProTools and FL Studio, but I just want something basic to get started. Free software would be preferable, but I don't mind spending up to $60 or so for something that's good. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Pro Tools First is free and Garage band is good if you have an apple device. Most popular programs have a free version I think.
